Welcome to Material Difference – Ann Nguyen

We are so excited to be launching not only our first featured artist, but this particular artist’s first foray into using fabric design as her creative medium.

The talented Ann Nguyen, who creates under the brand The Artful Grimmer, is an artist who enjoys living her best creative life with her family of five in Brisbane, Australia.

We recently sat down with Ann (over coffee and food of course – we are all human after all!!) to discover a little more about her and her artwork.

Here’s what we found out:

Tell us a little bit about yourself and what you do!

I am a lover of plants, painting, and all things colourful. I found my green thumb during 2020 and began painting pots to house my growing indoor jungle.

Where does your inspiration come from?

I am inspired by colours and patterns everywhere, especially in textiles and home decor. Sometimes I might be inspired by a pattern in the concrete of a sidewalk. Or the colours of a swimsuit in a store window. The other day I stopped to snap a photo of some gift wrap in a shop because I saw a shape I liked. I love exploring new places and things because it sparks all kinds of inspiration and creativity for me. The more I see, the more inspired I am.

What motivates you to pursue your creative passion?

I left my job in law in search of adventure and I am so happy that I get to be creative every day now. It's easy to feel motivated because I wake up excited to paint, and I go to bed thinking about what I am going to paint tomorrow.

What are the top three things, or 'rules' you choose to live by?

Be kind. Progress not perfection. The more colour, the better!

What is the one thing you cannot wait to have in your very own fabric?

I would love a dress...with matching home decor pieces...and pet accessories. It's just too hard to choose just one thing!
