Material Difference welcomes Julie Harrison from Pattern Play Studio to the family!

We are very excited to have the talented Julie Harrison from Pattern Play Studio join the Material Difference family as our July Featured Artist.

We asked Julie to tell us a little more about herself and her artistic style and this is what we found out!

Tell us a little bit about yourself and what you do!

Hello, I’m Julie, I live in Brisbane and I’m a qualified graphic designer with 20 years’ experience working in the corporate world. Thankfully I escaped with a smile on my face and a spring in my step, and launched Pattern Play Studio 5 years ago. I’m a self-taught Surface pattern designer and textile designer, however whatever label you put on it, I am a creative at heart.

Where does your inspiration come from?

Memories of a happy childhood in the 70’s. 🙂 The bold wallpapers are imprinted on my brain I’m sure. I also love scoping out antique shops and getting lost in art galleries and book stores. Getting out in the countryside really rejuvenates me and I need to do it often or cabin fever sets in. My design heroes are Marimekko and Orla Kiely and I love the textiles of William Morris and Liberty.

What motivates you to pursue your creative passion?

I don’t think I could do anything else! It’s in my blood. I have Cartographers, Book binders, Linotype operators, Milliners, Seamstresses, Photographers and talented Crafters in my family tree. But the feeling of satisfaction I get when I see my art on a product is amazing and when that design on that product makes someone else feel good, well.... that’s the real motivation to continue to do what I do.

What are the top three things, or ‘rules’ you choose to live by?

Age is only a number.
Be kind and considerate.
Life is short, so do the things you want to do now (as long as no one gets hurt).

What is the one thing you cannot wait to have in your very own fabric?

Oh that’s a tough question. There are so many things! I would love to see my designs on bed linen and baby clothes to name two.

We are sure you can all make Julie's dreams come true!
